Ericsson is a Swedish multinational telecommunications company that provides telecommunications equipment and related services to service providers globally. The company supports digital transformation for the next generation of mobile services and delivers managed services, consulting, and system integration, to name a few.
5G
With over 86 commercial contracts, 27 live 5G networks in 15 countries (as of March 2020), Ericsson claims leadership in the area of 5G. The company is pushing the boundaries of 5G development and extending the capabilities of its technology. For instance, Ericsson has reached a 5G speed of 4.3 Gbps, beating Huawei’s previous 5G speed record of 2.92Gbps during interoperability testing using commercial solutions.
Some of the company’s innovative developments in the field of 5G also include spectrum sharing, cloud native dual-mode 5G Cloud Core for both 5G and earlier standards, and evolved Dynamic Orchestration with AI and fully automated networks slicing.
Ericsson’s breakthrough in the area of 5G occurred in the midst of an ongoing controversy over alleged security risks associated with the involvement of major 5G Chinese players (like Huawei and ZTE) in 5G deployment plans. The USA has been arguing in favour of a total ban on the involvement of Chinese companies in the deployment of 5G infrastructure, urging its allies to use 5G provided by other companies. This situation offers an advantage to Ericsson to expand its global reach, especially considering that the company has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the security and privacy of its 5G networks.
As part of its public policy and government affairs activities, Ericsson engages with governments and develops recommendations on 5G-related issues such as spectrum licensing policies and spectrum regulations.
INTERNET OF THINGS
Ericsson’s activities in the area of the Internet of Things (IoT) are closely related to those in the field of 5G. Developments in the field of 5G make it easier for the company to fulfil its potential in IoT. Aimed at helping service providers and industries to connect and deploy devices globally, Ericsson offers a number of IoT solutions, such as cellular IoT connectivity, an IoT Accelerator to connect and manage a large number of devices and applications, and a Security Manager and the Connected Vehicle Cloud, applied in connecting millions of vehicles.
Ericsson has established partnerships with various companies, organisations, and public entities and its IoT platforms have been used across the globe. For instance, with the help of its partnerships with T-Mobile Austria and Ericsson, Globe Tracker – a Danish company specialising in solutions for supply chain visibility – will track and monitor refrigerated shipping containers, no matter where in the world they travel. Ericsson partnered with Telstra, Lexus Australia, and the local Victoria government to complete a unique, Australian-first cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology trial that leverages the existing cellular network. In another example, the company concluded a partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications to create an IoT Innovation Hub for Public Safety.
On the public policy side, Ericsson engages with governments especially on matters related to IoT security.
