Activities

Baidu’s Artificial Intelligence Group (AIG) is the AI branch of Baidu. Its research branch, Baidu Research, focuses on future-looking fundamental research in AI. The research areas cover data science and data mining, speech recognition, speech synthesis, natural language processing, business intelligence, robotics and autonomous driving, machine learning and deep learning, computer vision, high performance computing, and quantum computing.

Baidu was identified as one of the first members of China’s AI team by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. It was tasked with focusing on autonomous driving. Baidu researches and develops autonomous vehicles in its Intelligent Driving Group (IDG), which consists of L3, L4, and vehicle connectivity units. The V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) department is backed by the Chinese government. Baidu has developed an open-source driverless operating platform named Apollo, currently in its Apollo 5.5 iteration, with curb-to-curb driving support, 360-degree visibility, an upgraded perception deep learning model, and a new prediction model to handle the changing conditions of complex road and junction scenarios.

Since 2017, Baidu has been leading the establishment of China’s National Engineering Laboratory for Deep Learning Technologies. The laboratory focuses on developing in seven major areas: deep learning, computer vision, computer auditory, biometric identification, human-computer interaction, standardisation service, and deep learning intellectual property.  Baidu outsources computing resources, algorithm resources, and big data resources to the laboratory.

Baidu is also a member of the Partnership on AI, an international coalition focused on promoting the responsible use of AI.

Baidu is one of the supporters of the Beijing AI Principles, a set of principles to guide the development and use of AI that is beneficial for humankind and nature.
